Introduction
There is not a more storied white wine estate in Burgundy than Domaine Laflaive. At their height, the wines were truly ethereal. The domaine hasn’t been without controversy, though, with a rough stretch of more than 20 years where they (and many of their peers) produced wines that were prone to premature oxidation and lacked consistency. The domaine has made numerous changes over the past decade, and while it remains to be seen if the wines will age the way they have in decades past, they are now consistently performing at an incredibly high level.
Claude Leflaive
Domaine Leflaive dates back to the early 1700s when Claude Leflaive founded the house in the village of Puligny Montrachet. It grew to its current size under the guidance of Joseph Leflaive during the early 20th century. In its current form, Domaine Leflaive is made up of 24 hectares in Puligny Montrachet of which almost 5 are Grand Cru, and over 10 hectares are Premier Cru. Since 2004, they have also acquired vineyards in the Maconnais with holdings in Macon Verze and Solutre Pouilly. Anne Claude Leflaive was one of the pioneers in biodynamics in Burgundy, which since 1996 has been entirely biodynamic. Her work significantly influenced the current development of biodynamics in Burgundy and the world.
Four Generations
In the cellar, the wines go through a long, natural fermentation in oak barrels before spending their second year in stainless steel prior to bottling. There is minimal batonnage between the end of alcoholic fermentation and the beginning of malolactic fermentation. Domaine Leflaive is now run by the fourth generation of the family, Brice de La Morandiere, who took over from Anne Claude in 2015. Brice continues the work of previous generations, focusing on refining their work in the vineyards, and with small adjustments in the cellar the domaine is poised for another 200 years of success.
