Introduction
You'd be hard-pressed to find a more iconic American winery than Ridge Vineyards. With a history dating back to 1962, they've changed very little since that first vintage. They are masters of making cabernet sauvignon and what is perhaps the most American grape, zinfandel. Their wines are elegant, with a clear sense of place, and are some of the most age-worthy wines produced in the United States. This legacy is largely due to Paul Draper, the legendary winemaker who held his position from 1969 until his retirement at the age of 80 in 2016. While Paul’s gift for winemaking was clear, it was his ability to let the sites he worked with shine by showing not just their terroir but also vintage character.
Monte Bello
Their Monte Bello Estate, located in the Santa Cruz Mountains, has a history that long predates the formation of Ridge. In began in 1885 when Dr. Osea Perrone planted the first vines and built a stone winery on the site (still in use today), releasing his first Monte Bello vintage in 1892. It wasn’t until 1959 when three scientists from Stanford formed a partnership to purchase Monte Bello and form Ridge Vineyards. The winery was bonded in 1962, they produced their first Monte Bello Cabernet, and they were on their way. Unusually, they started looking for other old vine sites and in 1966 were able to make their first wine from the now-famous Geyersville Vineyard in Sonoma, planted in 1882. Thus the identity of Ridge was cemented; Single Vineyard wines from Santa Cruz and Sonoma.Â
Just in case the world wasn’t convinced, their 1971 Monte Bello came in fifth place in the now famous Judgement of Paris organized by Steven Spurrier. Since then, they have expanded to make wine all over California, but still stay true to their belief in single vineyard wines, restrained winemaking, and a commitment making wines that age gracefully. They tend to pick on the early side for California, with Monte Bello rarely reaching 14% alcohol, and their zinfandel always showing more freshness than ripeness. Winemaking largely is the same as it was during those formative years, fermenting in stainless steel tanks, aging in mostly new American oak, and a long time in barrel. They use minimal sulfur or finning prior to bottling and always maintain transparency with winemaking, blends, aging, and harvest information all listed on their labels.
The current winemaker, John Olney has been working at Ridge since 1996, originally overseeing winemaking at their famous Lytton Springs estate in Sonoma before working alongside Paul and Eric Baugher at Monte Bello. John has the unique perspective–continuing the traditions of the past while moving Ridge forward for a new generation of wine drinkers. The Ridge Monte Bello Cabernet is one of the most unique California Cabernets produced, driven by elegance, restrained fruit, and focused minerality. The wines are always built to age, and the new American oak integrates beautifully over time, making it truly an American icon.
Ridge Estate Cabernet
Perhaps also one of the best values in California Cabernet is the Ridge Estate Cabernet – coming from the original blocks that were abandoned and then replanted, the vines produce a more approachable, elegant, fruity style of cabernet. Ridge produced its 54th vintage with the 2019 Geyserville, and the vineyard holds some of the oldest vines that Ridge works with. The wine is aged in 100% American oak, but only 22% new. The wine shows ripe plum, black cherry, wintergreen, and oak spice. The East Bench Zinfandel is one of the rare 100% zinfandels that Ridge produces, coming from single vineyard that sits over the bench land in Dry Creek. It is aged in 100% American oak, 22% new, and shows peppery red fruit, mint, and toasty oak.Â
