The history of wine in the United States follows two courses, with the failed attempts of the English and other Europeans on the east coast to plant vinifera vines, and the success of the Spanish to spread the mission grape and other vinifera offerings on the west coast. The current landscape is one of change, with many winemakers dialing back the riper style of wines produced over the last twenty years with a focus on restraint, elegance and striving for a sense of place.
